PRACTICAL STEPS · BETWEEN VISITS

Healthy living, in your real life.

Small actions for food, movement and rest. Start where you are—not with a perfect routine.

How Tejas can help

During a medical visit, discuss your weight, blood pressure, glucose, sleep, medicines and everyday routines. Your physician can help connect lifestyle choices with appropriate treatment and follow-up. Nutrition and activity guidance should fit your medical needs, culture, budget and goals.

START SMALL

Pick one thing—not everything.

Choose one meal

Keep a familiar meal. Try adding vegetables, reviewing the protein source or choosing an unsweetened drink.

Pick a short walk, an adapted activity or an indoor option that fits your abilities and schedule.

EAT WELL · KEEP THE FOODS YOU ENJOY

One meal. One practical change.

Choose a meal you already eat. Look for vegetables, a suitable protein and a carbohydrate portion that fits your needs. These are meal-building ideas, not prescribed menus; no cuisine or restaurant is automatically healthy or unhealthy.

A starting point: the plate method

NIDDK describes a 9-inch plate with half nonstarchy vegetables, one-quarter suitable protein and one-quarter higher-fiber carbohydrate foods. Mixed dishes can be adapted without fitting neat compartments. Water or an unsweetened drink can replace sugary drinks.

Kidney disease, pregnancy, diabetes medicines, religious fasting and food access may change the plan. Ask your clinician or dietitian what is appropriate for you.

Indian & other South Asian meals

Keep familiar foods: try dal, chana or rajma with vegetables and a rice or roti portion suited to your needs. For idli or dosa, consider a lentil-rich accompaniment or another suitable protein. Beans also contain carbohydrate; a small bowl of thin sambar is not automatically enough protein.

Mediterranean & Middle Eastern meals

Try vegetables with beans, lentils, fish or poultry and a suitable grain portion. Ask for dressings separately. Hummus, olive oil, feta and olives can fit, but portions and sodium still matter.

Chinese, Japanese & Korean meals

Pair vegetables with tofu, fish, chicken or another protein you enjoy. Adjust rice or noodles to your needs; ask for sauces separately where possible. Broth, pickles and soy sauce can add substantial sodium.

Thai, Lao & Vietnamese meals

Ask about extra vegetables and suitable protein with a manageable rice or noodle portion. Coconut curries can add saturated fat; broths and fish sauce can be salty. Check fish sauce, shrimp paste and peanut ingredients directly.

Mexican & Latin American meals

Try beans, vegetables and a suitable protein with a tortilla or rice portion that fits your plan. Ask about sauces, cheese and sour cream separately. Beans contain both protein and carbohydrate; a salad or bowl is not automatically a balanced portion.

American & other everyday meals

A sandwich, burger or home-cooked meal can be adapted: consider a suitable protein, add vegetables, and choose a side and drink that fit your goals. Portions, preparation and sodium matter more than a “healthy” label.

Eating out? Ask about the meal—not the label.

“Could I add vegetables, choose a suitable protein, and have sauce or dressing separately? Can I take part of a large serving home?” Confirm ingredients, allergens and preparation with the kitchen; requests are not guarantees.

This page does not list or rank restaurants, sell meal plans, or endorse commercial venues. The focus is choices you can use wherever you eat.

Do I need a protein target?

Ask your doctor or registered dietitian for an individual target and practical servings. Aging, activity, pregnancy, weight-loss treatment and kidney disease can change your needs. Do not start a high-protein diet or supplements without guidance if you have kidney disease.

MOVE IN A WAY THAT FITS YOU

A familiar route. An indoor backup.

Start with an achievable amount of walking, rolling, chair-based movement or another activity you enjoy. Build gradually and discuss limitations with your clinician. Check heat, air quality and weather; choose indoor activity when conditions are unsafe. Follow any individualized fluid limits.

Optional public resources: Plano & indoor options

In Frisco or Plano, choose a comfortable park route above and keep a recreation-centre option for hot or wet weather. Start with a manageable outing rather than a distance target.

Make movement social

Invite someone for a comfortable walk or roll. Choose a short route with a place to rest and an easy way back.

Keep an indoor option

A brief seated movement break or an appropriate indoor activity can help you keep a routine when heat or weather changes your plans.

Before you head out

Check the operator’s current access, weather closures, accessibility, fees and class reservations. These are independent public resources—not clinic-organized events or endorsed treatment programs. Choose activity that fits your medical needs and follow your clinician’s advice.

YOUR NEXT SMALL STEP

A plan you can actually repeat.

  1. Choose one food, movement or sleep change that feels manageable.
  2. Decide when it fits your day and what your backup will be.
  3. Notice what helps and what gets in the way—without judging yourself.
  4. Bring those observations and questions to your next visit.

Bring your real life to the conversation.

Discuss pain, fatigue, sleep, work, caregiving, medicines, food preferences and costs. Persistent snoring or daytime sleepiness deserves assessment; do not drive when sleepy.
